What is Pōwhiri?

Pōwhiri is a refugee settlement support service in Ōtautahi, Aotearoa (Christchurch, New Zealand) and means ‘to welcome’.
 

Pōwhiri was launched on July 1st 2022 and is provided by Purapura Whetu Trust - a health, wellbeing, and social service provider, who inspire people to get well, stay well, live well, and reach for the stars and beyond.

Who does pōwhiri support?

Pōwhiri supports refugees within the first 12-24 months of their arrival in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
 

Referrals to Pōwhiri are made through Immigration New Zealand.

How does
​pōwhiri help?

When you arrive in Christchurch, we will match you with a Settlement Navigator to support your settlement in Christchurch for the first 12-24 months.

Your Settlement Navigator will help you:

 

  • Develop and achieve a settlement plan

  • Set goals, plan, and achieve goals

  • Access support and resources

  • Connect with appropriate services

    • Housing

    • Financial support

    • Health

    • Wellbeing

    • Education

    • Employment

    • Other

  • Transition to local services

  • Achieve self-sufficiency, independence, participation, and integration in the community

  • Exercise the same rights as other New Zealanders

  • Have a strong sense of belonging to your community and to Aotearoa New Zealand
